Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans

Nelson, K., Rago, M., Balzer + Bray., & HarperCollins (Firm). (2011). Heart and soul: The story of America and African Americans. New York: Balzer + Bray.

This story summarizes up the African American history in American, from slavery to President Obama becoming president. It touches on many topics but a few are slavery and the abolition, Cowboys and Indians, the great migration, vote for women, and world war III.

Fourth grade

I would recommend this for children in fourth grade and beyond. It is similar to a chapter book with the longer pages but there still are many pictures. Introducing it when talking about history, African American history particularly. I think anyone would like this book. It tells you a lot about history in general and gives a lot of great information.

I really enjoyed the lay out of this book from slavery all the way until the election of Obama. I thought putting it in chronological order helped the story flow and made a lot of sense to me.

What president abolished slavery?
