Pink and Say- Patricia Polacoo
Polacco, P. (1994). Pink and Say. New York: Philomel Books.
Pink and Say, two soldiers in the Confederate army, were injured in battle and go to Pink’s mama’s place, where she cares for them.
Pink and Say would be a good story for fourth grade and up. It would be a good story to implement into a lesson plan about the Civil War. It has many words that students might not understand so reading it to them would be a good idea and going over the harder vocab throughout the story.
I really enjoyed the contrast between an African American soldier and White soldier in the Civil War. It shows the fear in both sides of the war, which is really important. The friendship built between the two men is really powerful.
