Brief Annotation: This book using rhymes on every page that shares a story about a man who is a slave and all he wants before he dies is to be free. But the “big man” says to the man “you belong to me”. The man is scared of the big man because he whips, chains him. One night however the man forces the chain prisoning him off from where its connected and runs from the plantation, he boy finds a place where other run aways slaves are hiding. The big man notices the boy is gone and come looking for him with dogs and a gun the boy must then start running farther from the plantation from which is escaped. Along the boy’s journey he helps other slaves, like a little boy whose mom had died. The man and the boy ran and take care each other and one day get their freedom.

Readers who will like this: I think readers who enjoy an adventure story will like this. As well as readers interested in reading about African American slaves and what they endured.
Rating/Response 1-5: 3, I liked this book, it tells an interesting story about a slaves journey to freedom. I also like the rhyming words on every page and the illustrations.
