The Ladder to the Moon

Soetoro-Ng, M. (2011). Ladder to the Moon. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press.

Illustrated by Yuyi Morales- Folktale

Little Suhailia wishes she could have known her grandmother. One night, Suhaila gets her wish when a golden ladder appears at her window and Grandma Annie invites her to come along on a magical journey.

This book has long pages and some intense words so this is for sure an adult directed book. It also has a pretty deep theme so it would be best to read this to your class and talk about it together

I really liked this story. Everyone has lost someone in his or her lives, so this book really hits close to him. I think a lot of us would like to visit our deceased friends or family so this is a great story about the “other world” figuratively.

How did Suhailia and her grandmother help others down on earth?

  1. Goldilocks Strategy
  2. Students classify their books they read independently as, too hot, too cold, and just right.
  3. When students use this strategy they can choose books at their own reading level and are more responsible for the books they chose. They will likely read more when they find books they enjoy.
