The Three Pigs

Wiesner, D. (2001). The three pig. New York, NY: Houghton Mifflin Company.

This story starts out as a traditional fairytale about the three pigs however, when the wolf goes to blow down the pig’s houses they are blown out of the story. The pigs travel to different fairytales and rescue a dragon, which ends up saving them from the wolf.

K- 3rd grade

This would be a great book for a fairytale unit. There are quite a few original fairytales, so this one has a good twist to it.

I really love this three little pigs version. It was creative and made me think of the fairytale in a new way. 5/5

How was this story different from other three little pig stories you have read?

  1. Hot seat
  2. Students take on a certain character in a story, and are on the “hot seat” and have to be interviewed. It would be fun to have the students interviewing the Wolf
  3. This builds on student’s comprehension. As they participate, they get a better understanding of what they are reading.
