Just a Minute

Morales, Y. (2003). Just a minute: A trickster tale and counting book. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books.

Senor Calavera wants Grandma Bettle to “come with”. Grandma Bettle still had a lot to do around the house so she continues to tell Senor, “just a minute”. She finally tells Senor she is ready, but he has already left and wil return next year.

Fable- Counting Book

1st– 3rd grade

This would be a good book for student’s continuing to learn their numbers. Grandma Bettle goes through all the numbers through out the story. This would also be a great book for students who are interested in the Hispanic culture.

I would give this a book a 4/5. The underlying message that Grandma Bettle is close to death is a really great message but I think it might be over the head of young readers. I like how they incorporated both Spanish and English in the book to engage manner readers, especially our EL students.

Why do you think Grandma Bettle kept telling Senor, “just a minute”?
